Appletreewick Guide

Appletreewick is a quaint Yorkshire Dales village where hot tub cottages offer a perfect base for exploring this stunning region. The village sits along the River Wharfe with easy access to walking trails and cycling routes.

The area boasts two excellent pubs - The New Inn and The Craven Arms - both serving proper Yorkshire food and local ales. Trip Advisor's top attractions nearby include Bolton Abbey (4.5/5), Skipton Castle (4.5/5) and Malham Cove (5/5).

Appletreewick has a fascinating history - it was once visited by Charles Kingsley who found inspiration here for his novel "The Water Babies" while exploring the river and surrounding landscape.

Cottages range from cosy one-bedroom retreats with private hot tubs to larger group accommodations sleeping 10+. Many properties offer stunning views across Wharfedale, with hot tubs positioned to make the most of the Yorkshire Dales scenery.

Sightseeing

Appletreewick puts you right in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales with loads of brilliant places to visit. The village itself is small but packed with character - two great pubs and stone cottages built from local materials give it that proper Yorkshire feel.

Bolton Abbey (BD23 6EX) is just 6 miles away and opens daily from 9am to 5pm. The ruins of the 12th-century priory sit in a massive estate with 30,000 acres of countryside. It scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor with visitors praising the riverside walks and stepping stones.

Skipton Castle (BD23 1AW) is one of England's best-preserved medieval castles, open daily 10am-5pm. It's about 8 miles from Appletreewick and gets 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. I love that it's survived intact for over 900 years - you can explore the banqueting hall, kitchen, bedchamber and privy!

Malham Cove (BD23 4DJ) is a massive curved limestone cliff about 12 miles away. The 80-metre high natural amphitheatre was formed by a waterfall carrying meltwater from glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. The limestone pavement at the top featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. TripAdvisor rates it 5/5.

Pet Friendly

Appletreewick is dog heaven! Most walks from the village are perfect for four-legged friends with miles of open countryside to explore. The River Wharfe has plenty of spots where dogs can splash about - though watch the current after heavy rain.

Both village pubs welcome dogs. The Craven Arms has water bowls and treats behind the bar, while The New Inn allows dogs in the bar area and beer garden. We've heard the staff at both make a proper fuss of visiting pooches.

Many hot tub cottages in Appletreewick accept pets, but always check specific rules - some limit the number or size of dogs and most ask that they stay off furniture and out of the hot tub (for obvious reasons!).

The Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey (8 miles away) has a dedicated dog lounge where you can eat with your pet. They even offer a special dog afternoon tea if you want to really spoil them!

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Appletreewick

The Dales Cycling Centre (BD23 5ET) sits right on the edge of Appletreewick and offers bike hire, repairs and route advice. They've got maps of family-friendly routes as well as more challenging mountain bike trails. The café serves brilliant homemade cakes and proper coffee - perfect fuel before heading out. They're open 9am-5pm daily and bikes cost from £25 per day.

Trollers Gill is a dramatic limestone gorge just north of Appletreewick. This narrow ravine was carved by Skyreholme Beck and makes for an exciting walk. Local legend says it's haunted by the Barguest - a giant black dog with flaming eyes! The walk takes about 2 hours round trip from your cottage and you'll need proper footwear as it gets muddy. One visitor called it "Yorkshire's hidden gem" on TripAdvisor.

Parcevall Hall Gardens (BD23 6DE) is a stunning 24-acre garden created in the 1920s by Sir William Milner. It's the only RHS garden in the Yorkshire Dales and features woodland walks, formal terraces and a rock garden. Open April-October, 10am-6pm, admission £7 for adults. Visitors rave about the peace and quiet - one TripAdvisor review said "you can hear yourself think here".

What's the best time to visit Appletreewick?

May to September offers the best weather for enjoying the outdoors and your hot tub. The Dales look amazing in spring with wildflowers and lambs in the fields. August can be busier with school holidays, but September gives you great walking weather with fewer crowds.

Can I get around Appletreewick without a car?

It's challenging but possible. The 74A bus connects Appletreewick with Skipton (30 minutes) but runs only a few times daily. Taxis from Skipton cost around £20. For exploring properly, a car makes things much easier as many attractions are spread out across the Dales.

Where can I buy groceries in Appletreewick?

The village doesn't have a shop. The nearest stores are in Burnsall (2 miles) with a small village shop, or Grassington (5 miles) which has a Co-op and independent shops. Most visitors bring supplies or arrange a supermarket delivery to their cottage.

Is Appletreewick good for walking?

Absolutely! The Dales Way passes close to the village and there are countless footpaths in every direction. Pick up OS Explorer map OL2 for detailed routes. The walk to Simon's Seat (6 miles round trip) offers amazing views and starts right from the village.

Do the hot tubs work all year round?

Yes! The hot tubs at Appletreewick cottages are maintained at around 38°C whatever the weather. There's something special about sitting in warm bubbling water while looking at snow-covered hills in winter or star-gazing on clear summer nights.

What's the mobile signal like in Appletreewick?

Patchy at best. EE tends to work in parts of the village, while O2 and Vodafone are more limited. Most cottages offer WiFi, but come prepared for a digital detox - that's part of the charm!
