Settle Guide

Settle, a historic market town in the Yorkshire Dales, offers exceptional cottage holidays with hot tubs. The limestone landscapes and rolling hills provide a stunning backdrop for your break.

The town sits on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, one of England's most scenic railway journeys. Nearby attractions include Malham Cove (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor), the Three Peaks and Ingleborough Cave (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor).

Settle was once home to Joseph Beuys, the famous German artist who spent time here in the 1970s creating some of his most notable works. The town also featured in the 2012 film "The Woman in Black".

Cottages range from cosy one-bedroom retreats to large group accommodations sleeping 12+. Many feature private hot tubs, wood-burning stoves and enclosed gardens. Some properties offer glamping pods with hot tubs for a more unusual stay.

Sightseeing

Settle sits in the western Yorkshire Dales, making it perfect for exploring this stunning national park. The town's market square dates back to the 13th century and still hosts a lively market every Tuesday (9am-2pm).

The Settle-Carlisle Railway (Station Road, BD24 9AA, daily services) offers one of Britain's most spectacular train journeys. The line crosses 20 viaducts including the massive Ribblehead Viaduct (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor).

Malham Cove (BD23 4DJ, open 24/7, free entry) is a curved limestone cliff formation just 9 miles from Settle. It scores 5/5 on TripAdvisor and was featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The limestone pavement at the top offers incredible views.

The Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough surround Settle. Whernside is the highest at 736 metres. The full Three Peaks challenge covers 24 miles with 1,585m of ascent (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor).

Pet Friendly

We've found Settle to be extremely dog-friendly. Many pubs welcome dogs, including The Lion (Market Place, BD24 9EF) which has water bowls and treats at the bar. The Talbot Arms (High Street, BD24 9EX) even has a special dog menu!

The Courtyard Dairy (Crows Nest Barn, BD24 9JY, open Tues-Sat 9:30am-5:30pm) is an award-winning cheese shop with an attached café that welcomes dogs in the outdoor seating area. They'll bring water for your dog without asking.

Walking routes from your cottage door are plentiful. I recommend the Settle Loop, a 10-mile circular trail that's mostly off-road and perfect for dogs. There's also the shorter 3-mile Settle Riverside Walk which follows the River Ribble.

Remember to pack poo bags as the locals are strict about cleaning up. The Settle Veterinary Centre (Station Road, BD24 9AA) offers emergency services if needed.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Settle

The Hoffman Kiln at Langcliffe (BD24 9NR, open daily, free) is an impressive industrial relic. This massive lime kiln was built in 1873 and is one of the best-preserved in the UK. The circular structure has 22 burning chambers and stands in an atmospheric wooded setting. A recent visitor wrote: "Fascinating piece of industrial history, well worth the short walk from Settle."

Ingleborough Cave (Clapham, LA2 8EE, open daily 10am-5pm Mar-Oct) takes you into an underground wonderland. The guided tour shows off stunning formations including stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years. The cave maintains a constant 8°C temperature, so bring a jumper even in summer. TripAdvisor score: 4.5/5.

The Gallery on the Green (Station Road, BD24 9JD, open 24/7, free) claims to be the world's smallest art gallery - it's housed in a former telephone box! Exhibitions change regularly and feature work from local and international artists. It's quirky, unexpected and totally free. As one visitor put it: "What a brilliant use of an old phone box - we were blown away by the quality of the exhibition."

Is Settle suitable for families with young children?

Yes! The Settle Swimming Pool (BD24 9DH) has dedicated family sessions. The playground at Millennium Garden is excellent for under-10s. Many cottages with hot tubs also provide games and DVDs for rainy days.

Can I get around Settle without a car?

Absolutely. The town centre is compact and walkable. The Settle-Carlisle railway connects to Leeds and Carlisle. The 580/581 bus services link Settle with Skipton and surrounding villages. Taxis are available but book in advance.

What's the best time to visit Settle?

May to September offers the best weather for enjoying your hot tub. The Settle Flowerpot Festival runs throughout July and August with quirky flowerpot characters throughout town. November has the Settle Storytelling Festival which draws visitors from across the UK.

Are there any good restaurants in Settle?

The Courtyard (BD24 9JY) serves excellent locally-sourced food. Ye Olde Naked Man Café (Market Place) does brilliant breakfasts. For fine dining, try Thirteen in Settle (BD24 9EJ) which uses Yorkshire ingredients in creative ways.

What's the nearest supermarket to Settle?

Booths supermarket (Station Road, BD24 9AA) stocks quality local produce. There's also a Co-op (Church Street, BD24 9JD). For basics, Settle has a Spar convenience store open late. The Tuesday market sells fresh local produce.

Will I get mobile phone reception in Settle?

Coverage varies by network. EE and Vodafone work well in the town centre but can be patchy in surrounding valleys. Most cottages with hot tubs offer WiFi, but check with the owner about speed if you need to work remotely.
